Description

Rare original cabinet photo dated August 18, 1918 of coal delivery by truck over the breakwater to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse in Rockland, Maine. This is an extremely rare photo and may be the only original of this event in existence.

On the sign on the truck are the words, “COAL, WOOD, HAY” on the top and under that is the word “SPEAR.”

On the back of the photo it is written, “These three and GMC truck delivered 13 gross tons of coal to the lighthouse in one day and this is the only time this has ever been done. The men by the truck from right to left are A.C. McIntosh, Lute Days, Bert-Herrick, driver of the truck. The other two are government men.” It was signed A.C. McIntosh, 120 S. Main St.

Why they delivered the coal by truck over the nearly mile long uneven breakwater and not by boat is unknown.

Overall size is 9”W x 6 ¼”H. Actual photo size is 6”W x 4”H  Cabinet image has crack fold in lower left hand corner and some damage to upper right hand corner.
