Connie Scovill Small writes about her twenty-eight years of lighthouse living and service along the Maine and New Hampshire coasts with her lighthouse keeper husband husband, Elson. Elson Small was the lighthouse keeper at several lights: Seguin Island, Avery Rock, and Portsmouth Harbor lights. Published by the University of Maine Press in 1999. Connie’s friend Tim Harrison (Lighthouse Digest editor) called this book one of the great love stories of our time. The book is a unique piece of lighthouse history. This copy was autographed on June 4th 2001 – her 100th birthday. Connie continued to be an inspiration to all who met her, doing talks until her death at 104. This new edition of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife presents Connie’s text with many additional photographs from the author’s collection. The book also includes an interpretive essay by historian Andrea Hawkes, who examines Connie Small’s life story as an important source for understanding New England history and the study of women, and places it within a tradition of American women’s autobiography.
