Size, approximately 7¾” – 9¾” tall. “”Following the direct intervention of President McKinley ‘The Revenue Cutter Bear’ was equipped and in November 1897 set out to rescue eight whaling ships which had become trapped in the ice near Point Barrow Alaska. Despite the difficulties involved in a winter mission to Arctic waters ‘The Bear’ managed to reach Seattle ten months later with four of the whaling crews, with no loss to its own complement of men.” The book includes 68 photographic plates, including several portraits, and one very large color fold-out map. Gilt lettering on original blue cloth spine. 144 pages. This is an extremely Scarce Book.
There is extra value to this particular edition because it has an exlibrus (book plate) in the inside front cover that states the book is (was) from the personal library of Frank A. Vanderlip (1864-1937) who was the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for President of the United States William McKinley from 1897 to 1901. Additionally, Vanderlip was a member of the Jekyll Island group of bankers that are believed to have formulated the outline to a plan that influenced the drafting of the eventual Federal Reserve Act.
